Rick Jones wrote up some rules for Wushu Falkenstein over on RPGnet, which should interest at least a few of my readers. His magic rules are excellent. Also on the topic of Wushu, the author turns out to be a regular poster on RPGnet. And here’s a post on running Exalted with Wushu rules.

I’m still trying to figure out the over the top problem. Here’s another take on it: Embellishments don’t have to be flashy. “I slip through the night, varying the rhythm of my footsteps irregularly, my black suit blending with the shadows, avoiding leaves and other noisy footing.” As a GM, nothing is forcing me to present the players with obstacles which invite flashy solutions — what if the fight takes place next to a sleeping giant?

There's an edited version of the Wushu Falkenstein rules on my homepage:

I didn't see this as much an improvement when they were first posted. CF is pretty easy, Wushu is pretty easy. CF has a little different flair which works will with its genre expectations, which are slightly different from those Wushu tried to emulate.

Though the edit cleans things up pretty well.

Those look nifty. I like the use of "Cloak and Dagger" for "Yin and Yang."

You're right, embellishments don't have to be flashy, and if you wanted a slightly different tone you could either create situations where flying wire fu and thyroid eating wouldn't be useful (the sleeping giant) or you could just agree as a group what tone and genre you're going for (you'll never use Wushu for gritty realism, but you could go, say, "James Bond movie" or "Warner Brothers cartoon" rather than "wacked out anime"). I think you're still going to have a problem with people exhausting themselves, though.

Maybe what Wushu needs is some kind of mechanism for distinguishing between minor and major conflicts, like in Trollbabe or Hero Wars.

Why in the name of all that is descent and holy would one want to run Falkenstein with any system but the Great Game? One does not mess with perfection, good sirrah! If I ever acquire a copy of this "Wushu," I shall endevour to adapt it to the Great Game!
