The Guardian lists the 40 best directors and is fairly good. David Lynch should be swapped with David Cronenberg, however. Also, Ridley Scott is missing from the list (he ought to be somewhere between 30 and 40), and Peter Jackson’s absence is wholly inexplicable.

Peter Jackson hasn't done enough good material to be in the top 50 yet, IMHO. Lord of the Rings is pretty much all one piece, if very long--and to be honest, some of his directorial choices are a little iffy, IMO.

However, if he does another 2 or 3 quality pieces, he definitely would deserve to be on said list; but since all his previous stuff is low budget horror that really doesn't qualify for the 'best' list, he's in that 'headed for greatness or 15 minutes?" category.

There were several folks on the list who only have a handful of movies to their credit. Jackson has several highly underrated films like Heavenly Creatures and Forgotten Silver that I'd put against several of the other movies of directors on this list.

PT Anderson is soooooo friggin' overrated. And Michael Moore peaked with "Roger and Me".
