These Depression era photos in color are amazing; the subjects are interesting, but the perceptual aspect is more so. I think perhaps we're used to thinking of the denizens of the 30s in black and white. These color versions -- surely they're publicity stills from Seabiscuit or Road to Perdition? It seems artificial, even though it's definitionally authentic.

We don't live in the world we live in. It's an imaginary construct, and it's surprising to see it as it really is.

Color pictures from 1939 are interesting.

But color pictures from 1909 are damn interesting.

*blinks* Those are stunning. (And what an aptly named site, with great cat-vacuuming potential.) Thank you.

Beautifully wild

I live very close to Great Lakes Steel, and it still looks pretty much like this, only less coal sitting around (I'm assuming that's coal, but it could be iron ore, eh?)

Way cool, and you're right about the perceptual aspect.

I've seen the WWI photos [livejournal.com profile] cspariah linked too, and they're mindbending too, but (however they're produced) they have a painted-in quality that doesn't quite look like the photos we know.

There's some color film (ie moving picture) footage from this era too - that really blows your mind.

That sounds dumb - I mean, obviously there is color film footage from this era (cf Wizard of Oz) - what I meant is color documentary film. WW2 just doesn't seem like it should be in color.
