Haven’t fared past the first run of breakfast joints I found for a while, but I did today. The Lighthouse in Medford Square is not exceptional and does not provide any unusual taste treats, but it does a basic breakfast damned well and I rather expect I’ll drift by there again from time to time. The coffee is OK and the hash browns are not too greasy; the french toast is angelic. Bring your own real maple syrup.

my recommendations:

  • The Neighborhood on Bow Street, Union Square, Somerville. Good pancakes, omelettes, and linguica. Simply incredible cream of wheat and miscellaneous pastries, which come with everything on them menu. Merely acceptable hash browns and coffee (which also come with everything on the menu). The specials are generally speaking enough food for two people.
  • The Friendly Toast on Congress Street in Portsmouth, NH. Worth the drive from Boston; they make their own bread and the anadamma toast and orange french toast in particular are simply heavenly as a result. Very good hash browns. Open all night on weekends, too.

My wife and I tried to go to the Friendly Toast last year on our way to visit someone in Maine, and there was a huge line out the door and a 45 minute wait! Must be a REALLY good breakfast!
