The guy is kind of like a great sports story himself. He had a little personal Web page in Boston for a couple of years, which slowly got noticed as some of the best sportswriting around. Then ESPN said "Hey, wanna do a column for our Web site?" And he got a radio gig. And he's just one of the most readable writers out there.

Doesn't hurt that he's a Bostonian. He lives that peculiar passion that defines Boston sports fandom for me. It's demanding and bitchy and spoiled rotten. We've had so many heros.

His column on Pedro Martinez yesterday made me want to cry. His column on Len Bias... I know some of my friends don't understand being a sports fan, and that's OK. But if anything can explain it, that column can.
