Andrew Hackard (a member of the Role-Playing Game category jurty for the 2005 Origins Awards) notes that Lumpley Games didn't submit five copies of Dogs in the Vineyard, so it wasn't eligible for an award. Given that, I gotta back off some of my criticisms of the awards this year. Who knows how many submissions actually qualified for the voting?

PDFs were permitted for Jury perusal, so I sent copies of Dead Inside, MNPR:RPG, and Cold, Hard World for their consideration.

Prime Time Adventures, right? Since it's not on the submission list at AAGAD, that means that not one member of the Academy -- which, one should recall, is free to join to anyone with 3+ published credits -- submitted it for consideration.

I submitted a bunch of stuff other than my own products. Some other people did, too, but not everyone.

Well, it's a damn shame on both counts. I haven't read MNPR or CHW, but I enjoyed the demo of DI that Bryant ran for us and would definitely have preferred seeing new and off-kilter stuff than re-hashes of old insustry standards.

I'll have to check and see if the third thing I did ever made it into print to sign up for next year. No right to complain if I don't participate when I'm eligible and all that.

I've got no idea of the economics involved. Is five copies a reasonable expectation from such a publisher?

Though given a juried system, I don't know what the alternative would be.

It represents a significant percentage of the print run. I dunno what the per unit costs are for a print run that size, but... I dunno, can't imagine it'd be more than a $50 investment in the possibility of winning.

In previous years, many companies (that could afford it) sent copies to every single Academy member in their interest category (anywhere up to around 40 to 60 people).

Five copies is a steal.

Only for micro- and small-presses. Typical print runs for products in the distribution system range from around 1500 to 5000; so 5 is a negligible percentage.
