Jan. 20th, 2003 02:17 pmThe America's Cup challenger has been selected. It's the Swiss team, Alinghi. In the most important yacht race in the world.
You have no oceans!
The Société Nautique de Genève -- the yacht club behind the Swiss team -- "develops various activities including the training of top-level sportsmen and women across four disciplines -- propeller boats, water skiing, rowing and light yachting." Light yachting. Man.
I mean, it's not like I'm a purist, but I sort of think that once the landlocked nations start challenging for the America's Cup, it's time to stop linking the competition to individual nations. Or something. Maybe the Swiss should do a deal with some country that isn't using all of its coastline. I bet Australia has some extra bits.
