Dan Duquette, GM of the Red Sox, was fired today to nobody's surprise but his own. There was this terribly painful wait while the ownership was finalized, during which Dan kept talking about how much he was looking forward to working with the new owners. But everyone else knew he was gone the day the deal was done, and look -- there he goes.

I will actually miss the guy. He had a knack for finding contributors. On the other hand, he was responsible for firing Jimi Williams, which was a criminal thing to do, and he also helped create the friction between Williams and the players. He was good at finding talent, but he sucked at working with others. I suppose that shows in that he didn't accept his upcoming departure.

In any case, the Red Sox of the last half a decade or so are no more, despite the fact that the important players are still around. But it won't be the same team without the weird little Duquette/Harrington/Williams spats. They were a pretty good team, too, all told; I rather suspect that if Steinbrenner hadn't been around they might have broken The Curse.

I hope the new owners don't bring blandness to the Sox, but the record isn't good. A lot of Boston media people are carefully ignoring the fact that John Henry happily dismantled a championship baseball team five years ago. Not really a build for the future kind of a guy.
