Let's imagine that there's a scale of appropriate reactions to a Game One loss by the "favorites." On that scale, the Celtics win shouldn't provoke an "Oh, fuck!" from the Lakers; I think it's somewhere between an "Oh, shit!" and an "Oh, crap." Call it an Oh Crap And One.
It's possible that some Lakers are going "Oh, shit!" In which case Phil Jackson should be going "Oh, fuck!" because that would mean those players aren't adequately prepared for the best defense in the NBA. But I don't think the Lakers bought into the media story about being favored.
In any case, that was a really solid game from the Celtics. Bad news for the Lakers: Perkins can play a better game. Bad news for the Celtics: you gotta expect Kobe to go off eventually. Then again, we said that about Lebron. And he did go off! Just... the same night Pierce did.
So on the one hand, it's still anyone's series. On the other hand, the Celtics are a step closer, and the Lakers are not. Game Two is a must-win for the Lakers; you can't expect the Lakers to win three games in LA. (No, you can't. The Celtics won two games in Detroit, including the last game of that series. The Atlanta/Cleveland stuff is passe.) That makes me suspect the Lakers will win it, since their backs are uncomfortably close to the wall if not actually at it. Conversely, the Celtics can lose it and still expect to pick up one in LA, plus Game Six, and then Game Seven is up for grabs.
However, it is written that KG will destroy any teammate who suggests that it'd be OK to lose Game Two. With his laser eyes. The intensity should be there on both ends.
Gonna be a fun series.
