Most amusing quote so far in the Massachusetts legislature gay marriage debate:

”God destroyed a whole city over this issue. We’re trying to save our city, our state. They see the gays and lesbians out here voicing their opinions and they know it’s wrong and we want them to know that we stood up for what’s right.”

Beware, Boston! What happened to Sodom and Gomorrah could happen to you!

300 Spartans, many of them homosexual, defended the cradle of democracy from annihilation.

You know, sometimes it's the obvious things that you forget.

I've thought a fair amount about just why the religious right cares so deeply about this issue. Why the left cares makes sense to me - but why do these people care so much that some other people _not_ be allowed to do something? I couldn't fathom it.

But it's this, it really is. They fear, on some level, the wrath of God coming down upon them for failing to rally against this percieved sin becoming a mainstream part of our culture. I think most folks outside the core 700 club audience don't really fear a literal Sodom/Gomorrah event - but many mainstream Christians really do fear God becoming upset with America, and things going poorly as a result.

I forget, sometimes, how this logic works.

So, this really is a holy war, and for both sides. Which implies that it's going to get a lot nastier once one side starts seriously winning.

Actually, while I agree that the religious nuts think in those terms, I think that a lot of other conservatives have a different train of thought on the issue.

The represenative who spoke after Maria St. Fleur summed it up best: they think it's a conspiracy by the evil Left to rob our country of all its values. They look back on the 1940s and 50s as being the "ideal" American era, and think that us libruls are trying to warp and deform American culture into something "un-American." It's not about civil rights with them. It's about taking God, family and all the other "American" values out of America.

Pity they're such idiots, besides being wrong.

I don't understand the lens of nostalgia for the 50's. I don't. For some reason, conservatives keep looking back on the 50's as some kind of epic Leave It To Beaver Marathon.

It's two-fold: naked power-lust and wilful pig-ignorance:

power-lust: The 50s were when white males dressed in suits were on top of the world and everyone else knew their place.

Pig-ignorance: In the 50s, no one talked about drug use/extramarital sex/not going to church/other scary things, so they obviously didn't happen and therefore the 50s were perfect.

Never mind the minor detail that Sodom and Gomorrah's crime was being inhospitable to guests, not homosexuality.

That's because gay people are terrible hosts.
