Hey, great. I didn't realize that crime and terrorism no longer existed within the US. Now I'm full of good cheer!

I'll wait to decide if this is good or not, based on who replaces him. I'm a little concerned that Ashcroft may have been considered too moderate for the position.

During the last four years our violent crime rate has plunged to a 30-year low. Under your "Project Safe Neighborhoods" the number of gun crimes has fallen to its lowest level in modern history. Drug use among America's young people has fallen and continues to fall significantly.

are any of these three true? i thought violent crime was up over the past few years, at least.

Yeah, as much as I loathe Ashcroft's behavior as AG, (1) I'm afraid of who they will find to fill the mold and (2) I'm afraid that Ashcroft is trying to free himself up for a more influential position.

I can't imagine good coming of this.

I think that's of a piece with Hillary Clinton running for President -- scary to those who ideologically disagree, but too contentious to be even remotely plausible. I'd be really really surprised if Ashcroft was nominated. It would certainly force Frist to use the nuclear option to get him confirmed, and since the moderate New England Republicans would dissent, even that might not work.

Under any ordinary president I'd agree. And maybe I'm just too much of a Kos-reader and ideological leftie to see things clearly.

But every single time, the last four years, that I've seen something breathlessly audacious suggested about this administration, and every time that I think 'they can't *possibly* really be doing that', they go ahead and do it. And I actually think they'd succeed. Would any GOP senators really dissent against a former senator's nomination to anything?

But perhaps you're right. In any case, there are plenty of appalling people they could nominate to the Court -- Ashcroft is hardly the only terrible outcome. I'm confident that in each of the four or so justices that they pick we'll all be taken aback by the audacity.

And for now, it's good he's gone from Justice. He's a really horrible person.
