Speaking of fractures in the Republican Party:

Roy Moore, the Alabama Chief Justice who was removed from office for ignoring an order to remove a representation of the Ten Commandments from the state judicial building, will challenge Republican governor Bob Riley in 2006. Betcha he wins.

I'm reminded of Tom Leher...

"We'll try to stay serene and calm,
When Alabama gets the bomb."

Who's next?

Been a long time coming. He's been talking about it for a while now.

Hell, the Atlantic this month had a whole article. He'll win.

No. The RNC will not support anyone who's running against an incumbent Republican. He will get ignored or even given the Rove treatment. Wasn't Bryant just talking about how the Bush Administration likes giving lip service to the Christian nutjobs without actually supporting them?

I'm the first to believe that the Atlantic may overhype things (a publication overhyping? No!), especially when writing to their particular readership. Hey, intelligencia, forget the Red Scare! It's the Right Scare! Read all about it...

Still, they had some evidence of quite a bit of grassroots support. And all that lip service is just about now starting to taste pretty sour in people's mouths. (Wow. I apologize for a terrible mixed metaphor).

The question is, does that sour taste push the grass roots voter towards letting up, and letting securalism win, or does it energize them to look elsewhere?

Given the recent history of grassroots voters in large elections, what would you say?

Five years ago I would have scoffed at most of the radical grass roots. Now I know: it depends on the issue, and on the location. A Gulf Coast state after God's Wrath? Versus an incombant who was part of the Govmint What Screwed Us? I wouldn't put it past them.

I'll admit that he might have success factors that other grassroots candidates didn't. But he'll still have to fight the RNC. Still, if he defeated them, the irony would be off the scales.
