So... yeah. I was reminded today that TooMUSH runs on innocence.com. Unfortunately, that self-same box had a rather ugly disk failure over the weekend. I may or may not be able to recover the files; I'm still working on it.

I am only somewhat comforted by the fine tradition of TooMUSH databases eating themselves.

It might be a good idea for someone to be thinking about a new home; I haven't logged in there for more than fifteen minutes at a time for a couple of years now, and as such am perhaps not the best host, as is perhaps obvious from the fact that it was the very last thing on that server I was worrying about.

Ugh.

Oh, man, that blows. Forget about my questions about hope--Gretchen found a workaround to get us into the system, and we'll get the data wiped before recycling the thing. Hope it doesn't take too long to bring innocence back up!

Ouch! I find it amusing that you forgot yu had a MUSH.

I should have backed up those wikis!

So, uh, what would it take to host TooMUSH? Has anyone expressed interest in doing so?

No, I have no illusions of being qualified. Trip could probably do it. If someone else is willing and has the eq/connectivity, though, we should just beam gratefully at them and throw money if needed.

(Or we could throw money at you, if that would help. :))

I'm happy to do it - I've set up MUSHes before in the past, and am only smarter now. :-)

What I don't have is a good box for it sitting in a stable place (ie, a rack somewhere). If someone has that, but doesn't want to mess with the MUSH admin stuff, I don't mind.

I can't imagine the resources are at all scary in this day and age.

I have a cheapo box sitting in my closet that's been on the net pretty consistently for about a decade (well it's not the same physical box, but you get the drift).

And I don't want to actually do the hosting part, so if you like, Kirby, ping me over on LogrusMUSH (logrus.com 6666) and I can set up an account for hosting toomush.

Actually, ironically, I think the account that runs LogrusMUSH is named toomush...since originally it was a backup toomush.

Uh, I mean I don't want to do the admin part. I do enough admin stuff.

I'm also happy to do setup and admin if Merlin provides the account.

You shouldn't need to bother with a separate box. Too should be able to share a box with Logrus without anyone noticing. CPU usage is negligible and RAM usage is probably around 2 or 3 MB, which is trivial.

Or the six or eight people who don't have Logrus logins could get them, and Too could fade quietly into the dust...

That wouldn't bother me particularly, but I suspect there are still a few people attached to TooMUSH.

Huh! I'd utterly forgotten I actually have a Logrus login...

Heretic! :)

I mean, true, we could, if that's what people want. But since there are volunteers, and resources are minimal, and I *like* Too...

I can probably help you recover the files to a restartable state, if you manage the recover the files but the MUSH server thinks they're corrupted.

Merlin set me up with a toomush account on maelstrom. If you can recover the files, send 'em my way. If you can't, let me know and I'll set up a new database.

New address will be logrus.com 6660

Per the wikis, if you can show us the steps to the recover-by-hand method, I'm sure your many wiki owners would jump in to help.

Also: it's still a delight to see [livejournal.com profile] evil_hat posting a reply on your journal. Makes me feel the secret parts of the universe are OK, resting in the hands of relationships between friends I don't know I have, and don't know are talking to each other.

Underscores!

Now that [livejournal.com profile] merlinofchaos has a Too database set up, could you add something to your inetd.conf that simply cats out a file containing a message with where TooMUSH is now when people connect to port 6666?

Specifically, if the message includes this string on a line by itself:

#### Please reconnect to TooMUSH12@209.157.143.163 (too.logrus.com) port 6660 ####

Then that will automatically trigger the jump to the new server in many clients. (At least, that's the format accepted by tf and by mud.el)

Let's be fair, [livejournal.com profile] evilhat did all the work. I just typed cpu useradd and poked the proper hole in the firewall.

I've set up a spot for a forwarder but I guess there's actually a new innocence.com so changing DNS on too.innocence.com is silly.
