If you're an iPhone user and you look on the AT&T support site, you'll find it claims that "text messaging (SMS) to an e-mail address is not available at this time." This is inaccurate: email to 1234567890@txt.att.net will generate an SMS message to your phone. At least, if your phone number is 123-456-7890. Be warned that long emails will be broken up into multiple text messages.

Noted. The information I verified is that you can successfully reply to an email SMS message, but not initiate a conversation with an email address as the target.
