While Silver makes a good point (In the mindset of forget all the nonsense, no one cheat and squabble like little kids and just play football) I'm not a fan of his writing most times. He often present his opinions as fact mostly to add color, but it's color that appears factual. (ie the wetting pants thing. he proposes that it happened, then refers to it as having happened in the rest of the article.)
Though I could be biased as he's decidedly anti-jet and anti-mangini in the other times I've read his stuff. Or I just don't like sensationalism.
(Incidentally, one great proposal for an alternate punishment I heard from a friend was to pin the draft choice losses on the coach for things like this. Rather than punish the organization, punish the coach. Though that is a done deal, it's an interesting concept.)
While I agree that announcing the new contract (which certainly was in the works for a long time now) was less than classy, the fans bit is becasue it's the home opener. Fans cheer for their team during the home opener, esp. a big game like this. (he's fond of oversensation and exaggeration a bit too much)
