Everyone except Susan, who discovered Blackpool, is fired. Completely fired. A BBC mystery miniseries in which the actors periodically burst into popular song? Or, more exactly, popular song bursts onto the soundtrack and the actors sing along, like demented British karaoke? This sits right smack on my sweet spot and whispers sweet nothings into my ears. It’s the love child of Dennis Potter and, I dunno, something a lot more lighthearted than Dennis Potter.

Also, David Tennant.

Here’s David Tennant with “These Boots Are Made For Walking.” For walking! Here he is singing “Walk Tall”, along with Sarah Parrish. And David Morrissey singing “You Can Get It If You Really Want”.

This is entertainment. I have ordered the DVDs from Amazon UK.

I don't believe it.

American TV tries to ape popular British shows and they almost always flop.

British TV copies COP ROCK and it's absolutely brilliant!

I'm living in the wrong country.

Ah, but then American TV tries to copy it again... Viva Laughlin being the attempt to copy Blackpool, which, as you point out, used the conceit of Cop Rock.

I don't know that I would go as far as to say that it copies Cop Rock...but it's funny that you mention American TV aping British shows and flopping because Blackpool already spawned an American version called Viva Laughlin (which starred Hugh Jackman) which has already come and gone from TV this season after airing only two episodes. It must have been pretty atrocious considering that the abominable American version of "Coupling" lasted longer than that.

But American versions of British shows aren't all bad - I loved the original version of The Office and was fearful when I heard there would be an American version. And while the American version isn't the "wincing perfection" the British version is, I think because it has become it's own beast it has come into its own and is in many ways a more watchable show than the original.

I knew about Blackpool! [livejournal.com profile] irishkate told me about it. But I forgot to post it on my LJ. *sad* I'm fired!

I can't join you in loving this. Sorry. I tried, but about a tenth of a minute into Tennant's rendition I had to flee in horror. I am not strong enough. I blame a childhood of forced watchings of Donnie and Marie: cheesy classics resung on TV by inappropriate people are my kryptonite.

is fun. I like the touristy stuff on the beach like the Tower and the Doctor Who museum and the fake pub made after the one in one of their long-running tv shows. Also...food. And Blackpool rock.

Okay. I made myself sad.

OH...MY...GOD...

I saw bits of one episode a couple of years ago, but as I didn't get BBCA at the time, wasn't able to watch any more of it. "Skweeze Me Pleeze Me" is one of the hottest hot things Evar. I wish I was closer so I could borrow the DVDs or watch it with y'all!
