Graphing Box Office

This is the coolest graph I’ve seen in a while. It’s a picture of box office grosses per movie over time, from 1986 to the present day. Very clever. You can see the evolution of the summer blockbuster, not to mention the winter blockbuster trend.

Not to be picky - while I appreciate being able to go back to '86, by only going back to '86, you miss out on Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Ghostbusters, and a variety of other early 80's blockbusters that I think would have some very interesting data.

Interesting also to see the "Oscars Bump" for some of the movies, like Forest Gump, Leaving Las Vegas, and the English Patient among others.

Although calling it a "bump" may be a little strong. In most of these cases where the movie had already been out for a while (I mean, Forest Gump came out in June!) and the Oscar bump was essentially enough to keep the movie in theaters for another few months. (Heck, for Gump it pushed it so that it was in theaters for almost a full year.)
