Youkilis Speaks
Jul. 26th, 2009 08:07 amKevin Youkilis, who plays first and third base for the Boston Red Sox and who is one of the best baseball players in the world, was invited to a suicide prevention fundraising event the other day. As one does: having a star athlete is a big win when it comes to fundraising. Turns out he's lost friends to suicide too. The organizers didn't know. Just one of those coincidences.
There's audio of his speech. I've heard myself talking like that. A bit hesitant, walking around the subject. As far as I know, Youk's never talked about this before in public. The event was no doubt a spur, the McNair murder/suicide might have had something to do with it. Sometimes it's just time to talk. I'm glad he did. I sent an email to his charity organization to say thanks.
Not getting into the heavy fundraising yet, me, but
michele_blue and I are walking to raise money for suicide prevention this fall.
