Alex Chilton, RIP

Mostly what people know is The Replacements: "Children by the million sing for Alex Chilton when he comes round." Well, and "September Gurls," but that's cause of the Bangles cover. Which was pretty good. I imagine at least half the people on my friends list will have already known the man and his music directly, but in general? Another in the long line of under-appreciated.
I knew about enough about him and his music to know it's a huge loss. I know, oh, about half as much as I should.
Alexandra Chilton was a character in Grand Theft Auto IV, huh? Maybe I underestimate the world. And that is his work at the start of every episode of That 70's Show -- you know, he probably did OK.
That's Alex Chilton singing at the tender age of 16 or so.
Forty years or so later. Lousy video, iffy sound, but good enough. One more, now.
1993, Missouri. There's a CD of this out there, I think. No idea if it's in print. This was the "one time" reunion concert, although I guess they had enough fun so that group played together a fair bit thereafter. Everyone is going to do these lyrics, but still...
Years ago, my heart was set to live, oh
And I've been trying hard against unbelievable odds
It gets so hard in times like now to hold on
But guns they wait to be stuck by, and at my side is God
And there ain't no one goin' to turn me 'round
Ain't no one goin' to turn me 'round
There's people around who tell you that they know
And places where to send you, and it's easy to go
They'll zip you up and dress you down and stand you in a row
But you know you don't have to, you can just say "no"
I've been built up and trusted, broke down and busted
But they'll get theirs and we'll get ours if we can
Just-a hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Years ago my heart was set to live, oh
And I've been trying hard against strong odds
It gets so hard in times like now to hold on
Well, I'll fall if I don't fight, and at my side is God
