CNN picked up the bogus drone story. Do these people not read? Blix said he found RPVs. I'm slightly boggled.

They did very carefully say that their information came right from the NY Times. At least twice--thus covering their butts when the info turns out to be wrong.

London Times, but yeah. (New York Times in the first mention, re: US officials; London Times in the second mention, which is when they repeat the canard that Blix didn't say anything.)

Meanwhile, CNN has changed the text of the story. Actually, hm, it's changed at least twice. Earlier today, they said that US officials were pissed off because Blix didn't highlight the drones enough. Now they're back to "the drone Blix didn't mention," as opposed to the drones he did mention. I'm kind of surprised; I didn't realize CNN edited stories so much.

Medicine: Lots and lots of Negativland's "Christianity is Stupid".

You see, there was this boy in the midwest who liked his music a lot. His mom thought it was from the devil and insisted he stop playing it, instead listening to good wholesome Christian music. So he killed her.

Negativland in a fit of insanity decided to issue a fake press release about how it was their song, "Christianity is Stupid", that caused the deadly argument. They had no idea the SF Chronicle would actually pick it up as a real story.... then the AP wire. No one bothered to actually call anyone from the midwestern town, they trusted the one fake press release.

Moral of the story? The press doesn't bother to check its sources.

Ted Koppel on Nightline just repeated the same mistake -- heard it as I was turning off the TV tonight. '...a new kind of missile... buried in Hans Blix's written report, but not mentioned in his oral report...' One might start to consider this deliberate, given how CNN went back and forth. How big a deal is this going to become?
