Training Day
Oct. 7th, 2001 09:22 amI did manage to catch Training Day last night, so the day wasn't a total loss. Hm, after writing the below I've decided there be mild spoilers. Spoiler-free review: good movie, lost some focus at the end but well, well worth seeing. Denzil Washington was superb.
Very good movie, which could have been excellent except for an unfortunate coincidence in the plot towards the end. It's a shame; I think it could have been avoided without too much work. Maybe.
Some reviewers have complained about the "superhuman action" towards the end. While it's true that the movie takes a turn towards the action-filled, I think the superhuman aspect is justified. The cops in the movie are superhuman, throughout the flick. While we don't see them in action much early on, we do see Ethan Hawke beating up two men, and we see the aura Denzil Washington carries around with him. The movie is, in part, exploring the mythic aspect of the police -- think about why Denzil gets away with the things he does.
I mentioned that Denzil rocked. Ethan Hawke did what was required of him. The supporting cast was good enough. The directing was really solid. Go see it.
