Good news, without question. Doesn’t make people on US soil a whole lot safer, but it may make a difference for soldiers in Iraq, and it’s excellent news for the Iraqi people.

I could speculate all day on the possible effects of this. “Aha, now the attacks on American troops will slow down.” “Aha, now the Iraqis won’t feel the need for US protection and will demonstrate against the occupation.” “Aha, there will be a major boom in Saddam bobblehead dolls.” I don’t have any idea what will happen, though, so I’m not going to try and say something authoritative and convincing. I’ll just be happy the guy’s caught.

Josh Marshall can say something authoritative if he likes, though, cause he called this one. And — crap, here comes the cynicism. It’s great timing, capturing Saddam on the same day the Telegraph runs dubious stories about the Saddam/9-11 connection.

Well, chances are it’s just coincidence, anyhow. Still good news for the Iraqi people, either way.

Speculation is one thing, but fact is another issue altogether. Simply put, in my eyes, the capture of Saddam will have little to no effect on the situation in Iraq. Some might feel liberated, and no doubt the brain-washed masses of these United States will feel justified with their support for this bloody, lamenting war, but that will be as far as this goes.

Don't get me wrong... Saddam wasn't a good man and his capture is a good thing. However, he wasn't calling shots from the sidelines in his spiderhole, nor was he a threat to any American in the States or Iraq. Thankfully the Bush administration wasn't attempting to use Saddam's capture as another feel-good moment like when he served plastic turkey to troops on Thanksgiving (But time has yet to tell).

In the end, we are still looking at the majority of Iraqi people wishing for and attempting to rid of the American soldiers in Iraq. No soldiers will come home (We just sent out the largest deployment since WWII) any sooner. Things won't be any easier. Hopefully, though, the troops will be looked after and many will return home within 6 monthes. That would be the best case scenerio, but not likely.

And to break this down into an even more cynical view: I think we can all look forward, thanks to this, to another four years of the Bush Administration. This is exactly what he needed to win the '04 election, so regardless of whether Saddam's capture is of any significance to the Iraqi people or to our own national security, Bush now has his trump card.

Because the American public at large is too stupid to remember that the person actually most likely to have trained, encouraged, and financed the 9/11 attacks is still at large, in spite of our having invaded two separate countries.

And, additionally, the American public is too stupid to look at anything else besides 9/11 these days. If Bush didn't have that event on his track record, he'd stand no chance of getting re-elected in '04, because by any standard he's done a miserable job as president. But he can ride the 9/11 catastrophe right into office, because people are all sentimental and scared.
