Whoops, let’s add one to the Best of the Rest list: Down With Love, easily the best romantic comedy of the year. (I thought Intolerable Cruelty suffered from being written by people who were not the Coen brothers, despite being a fun trifle.) Witty and charming and full of banter, plus it took itself (and its genre) exactly seriously enough.

How odd; I came out of Intolerable Cruelty thinking that it was the movie Down With Love wanted to be.

Yes. Both Down with Love and Intolerable Cruelty were game attempts at what Lisa calls "the Holy Grail," which is: a romantic comedy that doesn't insult her considerable intelligence. Neither quite achieved the Grail. But the loving recreation of the period look and feel makes Down With Love, for me, the larger achievement of the two.
