You know, Bloomberg spent a huge load of his own money buying the mayorship of NYC this last time. Now, I know that he's probably still in the top twenty richest people in the country, but there's a really easy way for him to guarantee that the Democrats won't put up a serious challenger when his term expires. It might set him up for a bit of a primary fight, but that's cheap compared to a general election. Besides, it's not as though he'd be the first mayor in the state to do it.
Of course, Bloomberg may also be tired of the whole mayor gig.
Somewhere, I speculated that Mayor Street (Philadelphia) might want to get into the act too, but over the weekend my mother pointed out that Street's political base is in Philadelphia's Black churches, and he's not likely to go so directly against his base, even if he might benefit from some political cover for some anti-gay votes from his city council days.
So which city in NJ gets to be first? And when do you suppose the mayors of Minneapolis or St. Paul will at the very least make a Daley-like "fine by me" statement?
