Mar. 9th, 2004 03:41 pmWho doesn’t need more books? Lorem Ipsum, the hot new used bookstore in Inman Square, is throwing a grand opening party this Friday at 7 PM. My brother made their bookshelves. They have a blog. They’re cool. See you there.

Date: 2004-03-09 01:50 pm (UTC)Alas, I have no money for books and no space for them and I'm not allowed in used bookstores. The explosive-device planted at the base of my skull explodes if I enter one.

Date: 2004-03-09 02:11 pm (UTC)I leave Cambridge, and within a season, they open up a cool new used bookstore a scant quarter hour's walk from my former doorstep?
I would weep, but the tears could not wash away my pain. I must console myself in our local store, Caveat Emptor, which, while cool, has no blog.

Date: 2004-03-10 09:18 am (UTC)Although I found their selection to be kind of lacking. A lot of their books--the science fiction and mystery in particular, but others as well, I think--were ex-library books, and there's not much to pick from in books that a library didn't want any more. Perhaps their selection is better in the categories that have more shelf space but no interest for me, such as science, but I did go in there with the intent of buying at least one book and I left fifteen minutes later without having found anything I wanted.
And pricy. I heard the guy behind the counter explaining that they priced their books not on instinct or half-the-cover-price like other used bookstores, but by going online and seeing what the used book tends to sell for. Well and good, but it did mean that the two or three books I picked up to consider more seriously had prices that made me put them right back down again. (Not $20 or anything, just more than I was willing to pay for that particular book.)
I wish them the best, but I myself didn't think much of it.

They were thinking about automatically figuring the price based on real-time online pricing, but it didn't work out yet. This may not work out so well if it removes the thrill of the lucky find.
