Belatedly: yes, Kill Bill: Volume 2 is a big fat pile of talkative fun. It is not as violence-packed as Volume 1, but it is certainly a tale of bloody revenge and the fight scenes are top-notch. Tarantino’s obsessed with flashbacks and non-linear storytelling, right? So Volume 1 is the action, and Volume 2 is a kind of weird metaflashback that goes back over all the violent impulses and actions of the first volume and explains the motivations behind them.

Maybe not. But it’s still tres cool. Not super-deep, but super-cool.

it was so much more spaghetti western than HK/JP action. but i did like getting some actual characterization filled in.

it was solid fun on its own, and it made part 1 better for me in retrospect. (it also didn't have any moments where i thought "man, quentin doesn't like women." which part 1 definitely did.)

not to post spoilers, but the scene in the hotel room (the certanapl grfg scene for the rot-13'ed folks) was absolutely fabulous -- it wasn't derivative or a knock-off of somebody elsees stuff, as far as i know. it was new and hilarious and tense and outstanding.

I've only seen vol 1 (this past weekend on dvd) but I'm hoping the 2nd volume feels less derivative. I kept on finding myself saying "Wow, this reminds me of that scene in X, and then finding out that its exactly what Tarantino was emulating. The line between homage/inspired-by and copying is in the eye of the beholder. But for me it was a little too much on the copying.

And he needs to get over his fascination with non-linear storytelling. Sometimes it works, but its not always that good.
