It's pretty great that Iraq is getting to have an election. I don't have a lot of hope for it; I think that we've failed to prevent the Sunni/Shia conflict from heating up, and I am not yet convinced we're going to see any kind of stability in the country over the course of the next five years or more. But I'm glad that Iraq is having a multi-party election. It's been over fifty years since they've had one.

Yeah, and an election where hal the names aren't printed on the ballots and candidates won't even admit they're running because they're scared they will be killed. Yep, freedom is on the march!

It's kind of like saying that you're glad you get radio reception, even if the house burned down. It's a small thing and quite possibly temporary, but it's true nonetheless.

I'm glad they're having an election. I just wish we'd helped them get there the way we helped the Eastern Bloc break up, rather than by invading.
