It hasn't been posted on their calendar yet, but the Spring 2005 Brattle schedule is out. Highlights include:

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and The Pink Panther, both with new 35 mm prints.

Ong Bak one more time, if you missed it at the Kendall.

A classic Westerns series, including Rio Bravo (Howard Hawks, John Wayne), The Searchers (more John Wayne), Shane (mmm, Alan Ladd), High Plains Drifter (Clint Eastwood directing and starring), Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West, and The Quick & The Dead.

The Asian Cinevisions Film Festival, which includes Joint Security Area this time around -- it's Park Chan-Wook's first feature movie, which was followed by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy. Neither of which I liked, but so many people I respect adore his work that I'm gonna keep delving into it until I figure it out. (Which means seeing Old Boy at the Kendall this weekend, I think.)

A Hal Hartley mini-fest, just for Jeff. It includes Girl From Monday, his latest movie. Hartley's latest, not Jeff's.

A Harold Lloyd festival, running a full week and showing 13 different Lloyd movies.

All three James Dean movies.

That'll keep me pretty busy.

Is 'Girl Shy' one of the Lloyd films they are showing? That is one of my personal faves.

Silents are becoming a meme. No sooner do I finish 'Lights! Camera! Action!,' then TCM has a month of silents, and now this Lloyd retrospective! ;)

Simple Men and/or Amateur, both of which I have but on VHS which hardly counts anymore?

Book of Life, yes. No Such Thing, yes (both of them Wednesday, June 8th). Simple Men, no. Amateur, yes.

Also Henry Fool, The Unbelievable Truth, and a program of his short films.

Where's High Noon?

Those are excellent westerns, although I think it's wierd to show Rio Bravo without showing High Noon first, since that's the film Hawks was responding to. The Searchers and Shane are classics. I would have included The Man who Shot Liberty Valance instead of one of the last three, but ah! Perhaps they didn't want to show any B&W westerns, which would explain why no High Noon as well.

I'm happy to see that The Quick and the Dead is getting shown among some other classic Westerns. We had a bunch of mediocre to bad Westerns in the 80's and 90's with only a couple that really stood out. Granted, I think there are a lot of folks that would also classify the Western as a dying genre. I always thought that The Quick and the Dead got a bad rap and got lumped in with some poor films, but I thought it had an interesting take on things and had a great cast (I remember seeing Russel Crowe in it for the first time and thinking that we could expect some good stuff from him). It's nice to see it getting some respect.

I can't parse this - are you saying you have seen Old Boy, or you haven't? I read a rave review of it this morning in Boston Metro of all places.

I've seen it, but I saw it at like 3 AM and I was a little fuzzy so I feel like I owe it another chance.

I saw "Joint Security Area" at the SIFF a few years ago, and I liked it. I haven't seen any of his other stuff, though.
