Sports journalism is often a pretty conservative field, especially when it comes to talk radio. Tank McNamara, the sports-themed comic strip -- I say "the." Maybe there's another one, I dunno, but it's the only one I know about. Anyhow.

The current storyline is about Tank McNamara infiltrating the Minutemen, that charming anti-immigration group that's walking the thin line between citizen activism and vigilante activity. Cause the biggest threat to the United States today is illegal Mexican immigration.

The writer has some fairly stinging things to say about the Minutemen. "Well, some of these guys have gone over the top. They've become total whack jobs. And I should know. I'm one of them. A 'Minuteman,' not a whack job." Interesting stuff. I dunno if the comic strip has been this political before, although I have vague memories of it being so from time to time.

I don't really have much to say about this, I'm just thinking it'll be interesting to read the strip and keep an eye out for fallout.

I stopped reading it `cause it got a little too preachy. As for other sports-themed comic strips, i like In The Bleachers.

I would like to remind you that Tank McNamara is Spenser's favorite comic strip.

I have no point, I'm just a Spenser junkie.

Wow - thanks for posting that. Living here in AZ this is a big issue - and the Minutemen are a big issue. A week or two ago they had Bill Richardson, Governor of NM on NPR talking about calling for a State of Emergency to get assistance to do something about the borders. It was on Talk of the Nation, so someone called in - a Minuteman - to ask Richardson why he needed to announce a State of Emergency when the Minutemen were coming to NM in a month or two. I had to give Richardson a lot of credit for how he handled the situation. He stated that while he knows that the Minutemen mean well by what they're doing and that they are patriots that he does not want the Minutemen in NM and that what he needs are trained professionals. The Minuteman went on to say that a lot of them were ex-law enforcement or ex-military, to which Richardson just re-emphasized that that they want trained Border Patrol professionals.

I have to give Richardson a lot of credit to have the cojones to up and tell this Minuteman on national radio that they're not wanted in his state. Takes a lot of guts to tell a few thousand well-armed idealogues to stay home, IMHO.
