LJ Press Release
Jan. 6th, 2009 01:30 pm"We're not going anywhere!" This is about what I was suspecting -- there will still be LJ programmers, but they'll be in Russia, where it's cheaper. The Russian version of LJ has done some cool things, so it's not like the code base is in amateur hands.
You should still back your stuff up.

Date: 2009-01-06 06:34 pm (UTC)What's wrong with Russian programmers? Just the trade deficit?

In my country...the computer codes you?
Date: 2009-01-06 06:42 pm (UTC)That said, having known way too many "computer guys" over the years, they do have a special place in my heart as "dudes I want my money to go to." Those dudes are typically my friends, ya know? Or, these days, my friends' friends. Largely, I want my money going to American interests where possible and appropriate - and I feel that the "computer guy" is a natural resource I want to support.
Does that make any sense?

Date: 2009-01-06 07:08 pm (UTC)I've actually been in a few conversations in my day where I've referred to myself as a "dude" or even a "guy" and had a sudden flinch that I was giving the person I was speaking to specific ideas about me and my sense of identity. To me, those two terms truly are completely neuter.
Anyway, point is: I feel more comfortable when my money is going to American citizen computer professionals, regardless of race, creed, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation. I am, however, a staunch agist.

Date: 2009-01-06 10:23 pm (UTC)So I've been doing this tech stuff a long time. I've seen Web sites vanish with no warning. I know people do have stuff they care about a lot on LJ and nowhere else. I don't think it's unreasonable to be concerned.
I didn't ever think the site was likely to go away tomorrow, but I still don't think it's completely impossible, either.
