"We're not going anywhere!" This is about what I was suspecting -- there will still be LJ programmers, but they'll be in Russia, where it's cheaper. The Russian version of LJ has done some cool things, so it's not like the code base is in amateur hands.

You should still back your stuff up.

See, this raises issues for me. I kind of want to be paying some American dude to keep my code in line...

Besides, now that oil prices have crashed, Russia needs all the income it can get or they'll be rolling out the tanks and invading places all willy-nilly.

In my country...the computer codes you?

Well, I have this idea that it really is possible for me to become someone who makes better, more-informed choices as a consumer. Back when I lost my faith in the vote, I came to believe that the only vote people like me get that counts is the vote made with my dollar. And, while I largely still believe that, I do admit to being somewhat daunted by the task.

That said, having known way too many "computer guys" over the years, they do have a special place in my heart as "dudes I want my money to go to." Those dudes are typically my friends, ya know? Or, these days, my friends' friends. Largely, I want my money going to American interests where possible and appropriate - and I feel that the "computer guy" is a natural resource I want to support.

Does that make any sense?

Strange to relate, they now allow women to work with computers too.

Have you just met me? "Dudes" and "guys" are gender-neutral terms!

Werd.

I've actually been in a few conversations in my day where I've referred to myself as a "dude" or even a "guy" and had a sudden flinch that I was giving the person I was speaking to specific ideas about me and my sense of identity. To me, those two terms truly are completely neuter.

Anyway, point is: I feel more comfortable when my money is going to American citizen computer professionals, regardless of race, creed, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation. I am, however, a staunch agist.

I should be using LJ less anyway.

Argh. I should be happy if LJ isn't disappearing, but they axed all those employees without warning or any severance, didn't they? That's a pretty rat bastard thing to do if your company isn't actually exploding.

I think you've put your finger right on it. I've been packing my bags all day, so to speak, partly because each tremor along the way has made me more inclined to make LJ "one less thing to deal with," and now, as you say, there's more rat bastardy in a history that's become way too full of rat bastardy. It's not the LJ I signed up for several years ago, you know?

I never said it was unreasonable, it totally is. I'm laughing at myself more than I am anyone else.
