Cats made it OK. They are all very dubious about the new place. We have blocked the hole that gave access to the space under the kitchen cabinets.

The travails of living sans furniture are pretty boring so I won't talk about em. Suffice it to say that our new mattress is the best thing ever. The movers arrive early next week. We get Internet on Saturday. Can't wait.

Thanks for all the offers of visits on the way down. We went via Scranton, which has less traffic and more pretty.

Yeah, it has been crazy raining. We had some weird freak monsoon while at lunch today.

Oh, hey, I'm definitely up for meeting up for weekend jaunts to DC. Lots of cool stuff that must be jaunted to! I'm tentatively planning on hitting the National Zoo on Saturday. (And learning how to navigate the Metro in the process.) If it looks really rainy, I might abort to a Smithsonian indoor museum instead. (Or I might just wear my new geeky hoody and enjoy less crowds.)

Kirby! When taking the metro to the zoo, you want to get off at the Cleveland Park stop on the Red line. That way you'll be walking down hill to the zoo. (I can't mentally picture what way you're facing when you come up out of the metro, so I'm not sure which way to point you, but I believe there are signs.) When you leave the zoo, go downhill to the Woodley Park-Zoo stop. That way the only uphill you have to walk is the hill in the zoo itself. :) Also, there are several nice restaurants down by the Woodley Park stop.

Thanks! I took your advice, and at first I thought you were nuts given how far the walk was to the Zoo, but as time went on and I realized what a hill the whole thing was on, I realized how right you were. :) There were signs, it was easy.

First time I took the metro to the zoo, I got off at the regular zoo stop and was so tired by the time I /got/ to the zoo that I almost turned around to go back home. :)

My dad lives about 30-40 minutes from where your flag on the map is, and my grandparents use to live in Cockeysville. There are 2 good Ren Faires within ~1-2 hours of you. :)

Re: cats - when I lived in Maryland my kitten got stuck between the bathroom cabinet and the wall. The maintenance people were very mad when I asked them to help get him out, and he finally did manage to get out on his own, but not without hours of crying and lots of stress on my part dealing with angry maintenance people. I taped a piece of cardboard over the hole, which didn't work - I finally had to use duct tape and wood.

Re: Ren Faires - the Maryland RennFest in late August/September/October is very good. It's better than the Boston (King Richard's) for sure. I've not been north from there, so I don't know what's around Philly/southern NJ.

The official state sport of Maryland is jousting. Which explains some things about the MD Ren Fair. When I lived in MD I'd always try to get to the Ren Fair on Scottish weekend. The Highland Games people come and do caber toss demos, plus there's lots of good music, etc.

Welcome to the best state in the nation. Really. I think so, anyway.

I work up in Sparks (a few miles up York Rd.) and live in Owings Mills (a half hour from Cockeysville). I can tell you where you should go to eat and where the game stores are. ;)

Oh cool. Where /are/ the game stores?

We traversed to Renaissance Games today, which took a while cause we took back roads and got lost but it was pretty. It's a bit of a trek but seemed like a nice enough store. I do kind of miss Pandemonium's indie games shelf.

We dropped by Legends Comics and Games on the way back, since we were sensible and took 695. It was unimpressive.

Alternate Worlds is in Cockeysville. It's in the back of the big plaza a little north of Padonia Road on the east side of York. They are mostly a comics shop but have a gaming rack. No gaming tables or anything impressive, but it's close to you.

Daniel Levine (dikaiosunh) knows of a decent store in Towson. Maybe that's Renaissance Games? They sponsor gaming nights and stuff. They might have some indie games but I don't know for sure.

Alternate Worlds is literally a quarter of a mile from us, which is pretty cool. I'm likely to buy my D&D stuff there.

If there's another store in Towson that'd be awesome; possibly also I just caught Legends on a bad day. They do have tables and such in the back.

Alternate Worlds is in the Yorktown Plaza one block north of you, actually.

Parsa Kabob in that plaza is good eats (Iraqi, I think). Right next to the game store.

On Cranbrook Road, near the plaza, is a pretty good Indian restaurant.

At the intersection of Cranbrook and York, on the west side, there's The Corner Stable. Decent ribs there, but it's a bit of a dive, decor-wise.

Go north on York till you hit Shawan and turn left. You'll hit the Wegman's plaza. If you're not familiar with Wegman's, you should become so.

Also in that plaza are some clusters of "boulevard"-style shops and "chain" restaurants. I highly recommend California Pizza Kitchen, which is in the back of the plaza, up on the hill. Noodles & Co. is cheap and yummy. There's a bookstore there, too, and it has a coffee shop in it with comfy chairs. Movie theater behind the plaza.

We found the Indian place -- not bad at all. Good Iraqi is awesome, check. Wegman's, check -- we weren't sure which grocery store we wanted.

I'm working pretty much across the street from the plaza, in fact.
