July 12th. 900-plus pages, the publisher says it’s a firm date, and Martin himself seems pretty sure about it as well. It’s a good year for long-awaited fantasy novels!

Okay, here's a question for the George R.R. Martin uninitiated, like myself: How does this series compare to the Wheel of Time?

I ask this because, I'll fully admit that I loved the first of Jordan's series, even though it was largely a hacked-together plot populated by every mythological, fantasy, and even some sci-fi tropes known to man. I stayed with the series for the first 4 or 5 books, but with every one getting longer, and more soap opera-ish, and crappier, I bid it a not-so-fond farewell.

Is this series worth my time? Because, so help me, the Wheel of Time set me off fantasy series in a bad way. I still can't get the nasty aftertaste out of my mouth.

The Song of Ice and Fire is, IMHO, much much better. Of course, it's also further away from being done, so there's that. But Martin does not populate his series with god-like protagonists who overpower everything in their way, and it's a solid plot. I recommend reading the first one and seeing what you think.
