Sleeper

I’m calling it: John Carter of Mars is gonna be the sleeper hit of 2012. Andrew Stanton of Pixar is directing and he has a pretty good track record. Taylor Kitsch is about perfect for the role of John Carter. And the rest of the cast! Mark Strong, James Purefoy, Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, Dominic West, Samantha Morton, Ciarán Hinds, etc.

I mean, not that it won’t fall prey to the geek movie trap and all. But man, that’s set up to be a huge hit. Disney’s pretty good at marketing, too, I hear.

I'm surprised it took this long to make a movie that's all mostly naked buff people. This could've been some of the worst dreck of the 80s...

I've read the books. I'll be interested to hear how much of the sexism and racism comes through in the movie.

So will I. It's the usual problem with older source material (e.g., Shakespeare), but when it's an action movie rather than an art movie one tends to expect that less care will be taken.

Nah. But right now it's not in the summer tentpole category -- release is in mid-March, it's not a sequel, etc. Also no big name actors. Although I'm seeing reports of a 200 million dollar budget, which would put it right out of sleeper category.

I completely would have assumed this move would be full of fale without your shoutout; I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

(I DID read and enjoy these when I was a kid and more immune to the sexism and racism, so if they can capture that feeling while updating them a tad, that would be pure win.)
