Unduly influenced by Passion, for better or worse, this week’s Monday Mashup is going to be the Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You can do it straight, as an evocation of faith; you can do it cynically, if you’re that kind of person; or you can say “Geeze, that’s too close to the line, I’m not gonna do this one.” I figure if it’s OK to express one’s faith by making a movie, though, it ought to be OK to do it in an RPG. (Also, I didn’t answer WISH 75, so this will have to do.)

My friend [livejournal.com profile] gammafodder ran an Egyptian D&D oneshot once where we were all servants of Pharoah and the main villain turned out to be Moses, visiting the Plagues on us and pushing the blasphemy of his one god.

Moses' one god then was revealed to be Yog-Sothoth, I think, which was cool but perhaps muddied the allegorical waters.

In high school, we gamed at a friends' house in Medford. His mom had twelve gigantic pewter figurines of the apostles, which I was not allowed to use as figures for iron golems in our D&D games on pain of damnation, apparently. but they did get me thinking about Acts, which we had just studied in religion class. What a great campaign that would make!

This was the point in my religious instruction where I realized where Gygax ripped off 75% of the clerical spells from: the Bible! And I thought what a great setting and campaign structure: traveling across the Mediterrean, proselytizing and evading those who were trying to crucify you! And with kewl powerz to boot! Of course, this idea never went anywhere; in my high school years I was hidebound to the standard D&D campaign ideas, but it's always stuck with me.
