DreamHost is giving away free application hosting. I don't know much about their service other than that they've been around a little while and they're fairly transparent about business operations. Quality? I dunno.

However, free! And you get a wiki, a Wordpress blog, a photo gallery, Drupal, and a bunch of other stuff.

I've been using them for years now for my personal stuff. They've had a few technical issues in the past (particularly around when they did some server moves), and I might not recommend them for a serious startup or real business, but for a place to put up web pages, set up my blog, that sort of thing, they're aces. I have shell access, and can do mostly anything I can think of doing without root access. Support is also really responsive.

For things like an MMO guild space, or other hobbyist concerns, just perfect.

Thumbs up from me!

What would you think of them in terms of an artist setting up a page?

Regarding their regular hosting: they would almost certainly be fine. The only issue I have with Dreamhost is occasional downtime, but it's usually a sporadic few minutes every now and then -- never hours and hours, in my experience. More than good enough for a portfolio site.

And, if you ask virtually anyone who has an account there, they can setup a promo code for you that can give you extra disk space, bandwidth, etc. Most of that isn't useful because most sites won't get anywhere near the limits Dreamhost offers ... but they can also just give you a flat discount on your first hosting bill, whether you go for monthly or yearly billing.

Yup! Just looked into this seriously, they're doing some cool things.

Anyone wants to sign up, go to http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?42255 and I'll get a reward. :D

However, I can custom create my own promo code to give people more disk space, bandwidth, free domain registrations, free unique IP addresses, or just flat out discount. The catch is, the cost of these come out of my referral bonus. So, it's all the same to them, and if I want to share the wealth, that option is there. I really like the flexibility. So if anyone really wants a professional sized account, just let me know and I'll share the wealth.

But mostly I'm posting because it's cool that they do this at all.

I feel like I should sign up just in case I someday want it! Free!

I may do that myself, just so I can stop bugging you to host my wikis!
